First ever live football commentary: done, dusted… and somehow not a total disaster!

Well, yesterday was a big day. I sat down, headset on, notes all over the place, heart hammering like I was about to run on the pitch myself — and somehow, I pulled off my very first live football commentary.

Let’s be real: it wasn’t exactly Match of the Day levels of smoothness. I waffled a bit (okay, a lot), I got a couple of players’ names tangled up (sorry, number 7 — you will forever live on as “that lad with the hair”), and there were moments where I genuinely just had to guess who had the ball because it was a blur of limbs and ambition. 😂

BUT…

Despite all that, it was a success!

The atmosphere was great, the game had a good bit of drama, and — most importantly — I didn’t have any major technical disasters. No sudden loss of mic, no dead air, no awkward screaming down a dead line wondering if anyone could still hear me. Honestly, that alone feels like a victory worth parading a trophy for.

You know, we always imagine that the first time we do something scary, we need to be flawless — smooth, professional, making it look easy. Yesterday taught me that sometimes it’s enough just to turn up, plug in, do your best, and trust that passion carries you the rest of the way.

I’ll admit it: I was absolutely bricking it beforehand. Nerves, imposter syndrome, the full circus. But once I got into the rhythm, once the first goal went in and I managed to shout something vaguely coherent instead of just a strangled squawk, it all clicked into place a bit.

The feedback’s been overwhelmingly positive too — far more generous than I deserve! It seems people would rather hear enthusiasm and authenticity than someone sounding like they’re reading a satnav. And for that, I am seriously grateful.

Would I do it again? In a heartbeat.

Would I maybe take an extra bottle of water and double-check my team sheets next time? Absolutely.

So here’s to new experiences, messy first times, and proof that you don’t have to be perfect to make it work.
Thanks to everyone who tuned in, supported me, and laughed with me (hopefully more than at me). Big love! ❤️⚽🎙️

Onwards — and upwards — to the next match!
